tips for a healthy life

0ne of the challenges entrepreneurs deal with having enough time to themselves – we strive for a work-life balance. In that quest, there should be time to exercise. In my quest to stay fit while I’m still working “in my business”, I’ve found that making time for exercise has a direct relationship with an increase in productivity and I am that much closer to some form of work-life balance.

The body consists of various inter-connected systems. The health of any system depends on the maintenance thereof. Below are 6 tips for entrepreneurs to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Here are 6 Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle as an Entrepreneur

Move
Start moving for at least 10 minutes a day. Your need not confine yourself to the gym – you can take a walk or a jog. Focus on getting your whole body moving. You could also exercise indoors e.g. squats, burpees or lunges. Over-time you will want to exercise more, so you will work on increasing efficiency in your business to make time for the exercise. You will also want to add variety

Working out, just like running a start-up business, requires mental determination, agility, flexibility and endurance. If you get it right with the exercise, you will get right with other aspects of your life.

Eat
Food is fuel for our bodies. It makes sense then that as we workout more often and for longer periods, we will need to eat more often. As you get healthier through exercise, you will realise you will not want to waste your efforts by eating junk food. Eat clean meals that have protein (e.g. chicken, salmon, and eggs), vegetables, and a healthy fat (e.g. avocados, almonds, and olive oil) or carbs (e.g. brown rice and quinoa). Eat carbs to fuel your body, especially if you are working out more than four times a week. If you are not working out often, stick with the healthy fats. The trick with food is to avoid getting hungry – eating small meals often, and if that is not possible because of your busy schedule, carry a snack box – fill it with snacks you can eat while you are on the go e.g. nuts, fruits.

Tip: Cooking at home is far healthier than eating from a restaurant.

Work out first thing in the morning
For me this works brilliantly, but I know people that prefer working out in the afternoon. Working out first thing in the morning means it is done. You will not have to interrupt your day to exercise, you are less likely to have work “get in the way” of your workouts, and the best part is you will have energy throughout the day. Having said that though, we’re wired differently and when to workout is based on preferences.

Sleep
Most entrepreneurs confess to having very little sleep, yet sleep is as important as exercise and food. We need sleep in order for our bodies to recover. Avoid working from the bedroom – keep that as your sanctuary. Research shows that you have better quality of sleep when there is fewer electronics in the room.

Tip: every once in a while, wake up without an alarm – sleep until your body asks you to wake up.

Take a time-out
Entrepreneurs rarely feel like there is enough time in a day, so we tend to overlook the need to take a break, to stand-up and stretch, have coffee with someone unless it has to talk business or take a holiday. A time-out may seem like a luxury, it is in fact a necessity for our brains to relax which reduces ones stress levels.

Surround yourself with smart and active people
Surrounding yourself with smarter and more active people makes it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and it keeps your mind sharp. Smarter people will stretch your mind, and you will find yourself working smarter instead of harder. The active people make it easier to maintain an active lifestyle. The combination of which, leads to an improved work-life balance.\\
